R.M. Horner opened his business in downtown Crawfordsville in 1933.

Fresh out of the University of Illinois, Russell M. Horner applied for a car dealership at age 23.  His father had been the first dealer in White County and his uncle was in the same business in Lafayette.  It seemed only fitting that R.M. would follow in their footsteps even though company officials noted his youth on his application by writing across the bottom, “Kinda robbing the cradle, aren’t we?”

What General Motors got was a young man determined to be successful.  His dealership was open 24 hours a day to better serve his customers.  He opened the doors in 1933 when a two-door Pontiac sold for $765 and a Pontiac coupe for $600.  The only accessories they had to offer were an extra tail light, horn and sun visor for the passenger side---all for $13.95.

His business began expansion in 1946 when a body shop was added.  In 1952, Horner’s Corner opened on the site of what had once been a blacksmith shop.  Sons, John and Jim, joined the business in 1960 and the operation expanded again in 1963.  In 1998, the Horners bought the GM dealership on US231 and John’s son, Sam, joined the business as general manager.

Horner’s Corner became a Chrysler-Dodge dealership before it was sold leaving Horner on the Highway as Horner’s sole enterprise dealing in Buicks,  Pontiacs, and GMC trucks. John and Jim have retired but make frequent visits to the dealership to observe the operations and offer their expertise.
